The Flames offers a Speech Club for homeschool children aged 9-18. Speech is an exciting activity with
three categories of presentation. Interpretation: Speakers present the story from a humorous or dramatic book of their choosing, either solo or with a friend (duo), in a manner similar to acting without costumes. Platform: Speakers create a completely original presentation on any issue of personal or global significance, with the goal of informing, inspiring, persuading, or simply entertaining the judges.
Limited Preparation: Speakers are given 15 minutes to prepare an argument on a topic they do not know
beforehand. The topics may focus on current events (extemporaneous), a defense of the Christian faith
(apologetics), or a link between popular culture and God (Mars Hill).
The Flames Speech Club has membership with Stoa, a national network of Christian homeschool speech
and debate clubs. Flames speakers are encouraged to participate in Stoa tournaments, which take place
in Virginia and around the nation. Speakers who do well at Stoa tournaments may qualify for the
National Invitational Tournament of Champions (NITOC), a Stoa event where hundreds of the best
homeschool speakers and debaters compete against each other.
