The Flames offers middle school, junior varsity, and varsity cross country teams for homeschooled boys and girls. Generally, middle school runners are aged 11-14 (as of August 1), JV runners are 15-16, and varsity are 17-18. The number of teams offered depends on the number of runners enrolled. In addition, homeschooled children aged 6-10 are encouraged to workout with the team and learn the sport, although they generally do not participate in meets. Typically, the Flames practice once per week, and participate in one or two meets per month. Opponents are other homeschool programs and private schools within about an hour’s drive. The regular season runs from August through October.
Flames runners have the chance to continue to practice with their coaches and teammates in the spring. Generally, off-season workouts are one afternoon per week, mid-March through mid-May. This enables runners to stay sharp, build skills, and maintain team bonds. Spring workouts emphasize speed drills at the track, as well as races between runners of similar ability levels.
