The Flames offers middle school and high school basketball teams for homeschooled boys and girls in the winter. Generally, middle school players are aged 11-14 (as of August 1), JV players are 15-16, and varsity are 17-18. The number of teams offered depends on the number of players enrolled. Practice begins in November and regular season games are played between December and February. Typically, the Flames play one or two games per week, mostly on weekdays. Opponents are other homeschool programs and private schools within about an hour’s drive. The last weekend in February, the Flames attend the Virginia Home School Athletic Association basketball tournament for a chance to win the state championship.
Flames players have the chance to continue to practice with their coaches and teammates in the spring. Generally, off-season workouts are one or two nights per week in April and May. This enables players to stay sharp, build skills, and maintain team bonds. In addition, the Flames identifies summer basketball clinics for players to attend as a team, including clinics booked just for the Flames. These clinics offer our players an opportunity to work with established high school and college coaches, and to build their skill sets in short periods of time.
The Flames offers homeschooled children with little or no experience a chance to learn the basics with youth development basketball. Generally, youth development is a single, 90-minute session each week in April and May. It is open to homeschooled children aged 9-17 (as of August 1). Youth development focuses on establishing sound fundamentals in shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, and defense. It combines drills and games for a fun, positive experience that equips participants to be able to play on the Flames basketball teams in the future.
